Where To Dive In Costa Rica

Deciding where you want to go scuba diving in Costa Rica is the first decision you should make. In general there are 3 main land based areas which we recommend along with the beautiful Cocos Island which is only accessible by Liveaboard Vessels and costs atleast $5000.

If you are diving the mainland, the three destinations you want to focus on will be the Catalinas, the Bat Islands and the Gulf de Papagayo as mentioned above. Which one of these should you choose? I will break that down here.

The Catalinas

Best for:

  • Giant Pacific Mantas
  • White Tip Reef Sharks

Not So Good For:

  • Bull Sharks (next to no sightings)
  • Macro Life

Bat Islands

Best for:

  • Bull Sharks
  • Massive schools of fish and rays
  • Manta Rays (not as frequent as Catalinas but still regular)

Not so good for:

  • Macro marine life
  • Beginners (can be strong currents)
  • People prone to sea sickness (ride to these islands will be around 1 hour)

Gulf de Papagayo

Best for:

  • macro life
  • less currents (not no currents)
  • beginner diving
  • small wrecks

Not so good for:

  • manta rays (occassional sightings)
  • bull sharks (next to no sightings)
