Four Rocks
Cuatro piedras is the Spanish name for four rocks, one of the more southerly dive sites in the Catalina Islands. There are, not surprisingly, four rocks visible at the surface here. Usually starting at the southerly larger rock and dropping down to 40-50 ft a rocky outcrop in the sand has small caves where you can sometimes find hiding sharks.
If the water conditions allow you can dive towards the north where at about 35 ft there is a shallow channel that leads to the north of the main rock. This then opens up into a bowl like structure where might get to see white tips swimming around, another channel takes you out of the bowl to continue exploring. If the conditions aren’t suitable then this area can also be explored on a nice dive heading south or north along the rock faces reaching up to 60 ft in places. Local fishermen tell tales of bull sharks being seen around this area.
Time of year and weather conditions can find the water temperatures to range between 65-80 degrees F (18-27C).
Marine life that are commonly seen at these sites include white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, eels, angelfish, butterflyfish and moorish idols, scorpion fish, octopus, schools of grunts, surgeonfish and barberfish.
